A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
