Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
