Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
